Ce este un "fapt stiintific"? Un mic studiu de caz: "Procesul pojarului"

Portrait Harald Walach

Thoughts on the meaning of life

"For each of us eventually, whether we are ready or not, it will come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises. No minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or owed, your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from or on what side of the tracks you lived at the end. It won't matter if you're beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin colour will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built, not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence, but your character.

What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. A life lived that matters is not of circumstance, but of choice."

Aldous Huxley: The real psychopaths

"The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted."

Attachment SELF Parenting

Neurosis is always a substitute for the actual suffering
- C.G. Jung -

OK, we all know what Attachment Parenting is about. If you don't have the slightest idea, please go away from this blog!

But how about self parenting for those of us who have grown up being victims of abusive parents day in day out? How do we take care of ourselves? How do we finally learn to respect ourselves, to give ourselves the equal dignity that Jesper Juul asks us to give our children? How do we come out of the vicious circle of anger, pain, shame, guilt, perfectionism and feelings of inadequacy?

After 6 years of therapy and knowing that the only way out is through the pain, I still have to ask myself: how do we confront and endure so much pain? How do we finally get rid of the idealised and internalised parents? How do we dare to be ourselves when we have been manipulated our whole life to be someone else? How do we learn to trust ourselves and our feelings again? How do we learn to accept ourselves the way we are, to love and nurture ourselves the way we are? How do we stop feeling lost and abandoned? How do heal?

I am not a guru

I don't know why, but for quite some time I have had this feeling that I must explain some things about me and my life to those people who mistakenly admire me. First of all, from my experience, admiration can sometimes be very close to hate: if the admired person turns out not to be flawless and, even worse, if you can't live up to your own expectations in respect of what you admire in that person, sooner or later admiration will surely turn to hate. Such is human nature. Some people want to change, but someone else should please do all the hard work, so they can only enjoy the good results. Well, it doesn't work that way.

When I was a child, I was always the leader, no matter with whom or what I played. It had nothing to do with an innate talent for leadership, but definitely with my obsession of being in control. Later on, I was always, again, the one with the initiatives, with the actions, I was always giving advice to somebody, I was always explaining to others what they should do so their lives can get better. I was always the optimistic one, the powerful and "electrifying" one (someone actually used this word to describe me). No wonder that my company was seeked by many.

Sometimes I felt like a guru. No arrogance here, because it cost me too much and I'd rather turn back time and do things differently. People looked up to me, which was of course flattering for the perfectionist that I am, but at the same time they kind of expected me to help solve their problems. And this masked the fact that nobody really liked me for who I was, but only for the impact I had in their lives.

However, since my life started to turn upside down when I broke up with my parents 5-6 years ago, the people who had "liked" me so much also began to disappear, one by one, from my life. Nota bene: I didn't do anything different than what I had done before, I just changed my life and showed others that IT IS POSSIBLE to shape your own destiny, IT IS POSSIBLE to respect yourself and live according to your inner truth. I even tried to help them do the same, tried to take them with me on my wave of changes ...

This time the reactions were different because it was a very deep change, one that destroyed all the foundations of my previous life and opened the way for something new, very different and scaringly true. This time, far from being an example (except for maybe 2-3 persons who had the courage to follow me at least theoretically on this road), most people got scared and shut down their communications systems completely, for fear I would continue to influence them the way I had until then. I can't say I haven't tried, but the doors to their hearts were shut and locked, so I couldn't get to them. The relationships died.

Then I met new people on my new road. People who didn't know me started to write me private messages (yes, on the DC forum), thanking me for being so courageous as to speak out the truth about abuse (especially sexual abuse) and abusive parents. People started telling me their life stories, disclosing their deepest secrets and the pain that they had been carrying in their hearts for so long and that sometimes not even their spouses knew about. At first I was shocked, then pleased, since it confirmed again and again what I was feeling, what I now already KNEW: that most of us have been abused in our childhood, whether we remember it or not.

Anyway, all those messages touched me, so I swallowed the bait and the barb only too willingly. I started - as always - writing back with empathy, consolation and advice. From most of them I only heard again when THEY had something to write about themselves. I even thought I made a few friends, who were writing more frequently (they will know who they are when they read this), but at a closer look (which I took much later) I had to realize that again, the main subject was always the other person, their pain, their problems... I almost never got any answer or even a short comment on what I wrote about me, about my pain, about my inner struggle.

Then came the forum slaughter when I started the fight to open the eyes of the parents who are poisoning their babies with these chemical time bombs called vaccines. Of all the persons who "admired" me so much, this time nobody had the guts to speak out for me, to take my side... so I stopped writing to most of the "friends" that I made through the forum when I realized that it had become a waste of time for everybody. Most of them understood and respected my silence.

A few months ago, however, I had to write one of these persons directly that I don't feel the need to communicate with her anymore. I finally allowed myself to acknowledge that I had never had the feeling of getting something back from such a one-way communication which she even called "friendship". She wrote "Since we cannot be friends anymore, I can only hope that somebody else will help you when you will be in need". Oh, let me guess, she would have helped me if I only accepted to continue to be "friends"???? HOW?? And why didn't this happen before??? Please... Oh yes, she was reading the topic on the forum where I was being slaughtered, I know it because at one time she intervened with a joke on the side of the jackass who had harassed me by inviting me with my son to the cemetery because I was refusing the vaccines. So why didn't she intervene then to stand up for me and my character, if I was her friend??

The mail went on with her manipulatively asking me not to regret having helped her... Excuse me?? I know that it was manipulation because at first I had the impulse of feeling guilty. Then I got a hold of me and realized that SHE was feeling guilty and she just projected this onto me, wanting me to feel guilty for "dropping" her. Of course I was very upset to go through all this, what with my love of harmony and all... But I didn't feel guilty anymore, which is a big progress for me, since my whole life I've been so easy to manipulate with feelings of guilt.

Conclusion: I am not a guru, no matter what other people think of me I don't really want to be admired, I don't really want to teach anybody how to live their lives. My struggle is only MY struggle, everything I feel, think, do and write relates only to my life and I don't have the energy anymore to be an example for anyone. Especially to those who admire me with the pressure of always wanting and expecting something from me. I don't know how to explain this better, but I guess everybody knows what I'm talking about. If you can't like me for who I am, then please leave me alone. Please.

* * * * *

I am very, very down today. Yesterday I cracked, really cracked. On Friday I cried at my hairdresser's, even though the afternoon had started nicely, we talked about nice, easy things... Then I told him about my November blues, my birthday, my father's visit this summer and then I remembered his words: "Do I get the permission to see David? It is only for him that I undertook this long journey"... then I started crying and could only say "What about me, father? What about me? You only have one child and that is me! What about me?"...

Then yesterday evening my best friend called me and I totally lost control, I started crying so badly and I just couldn't stop... I am at the end of my rope, I feel empty and lost and broken and... above all dead tired of everything. I am EXHAUSTED. I feel desperate and don't know where to turn or how to start solving my problems. I don't know how to be a good mother to David, to take care of my inner child and to be a good wife to Bogdan all at the same time. WHEN and how should I do this? Something went very very wrong along this way and I am scared that I won't be able to mend it and save everything, like I always managed until now. The irony of it all is that most parents who live like zombies seem to make it, while Bogdan and I are alive and conscious but our risk of losing everything seems much bigger!!

Anyway, I realize now once again, more bitter than ever, that besides Bogdan I don't have anyone at all that I can really count on. When I am desperate and in need, noone is there for me.

It's true, Mutti has been from time to time of help until now, but because of her husband and the way she is always defending him when he harasses and bullies us, we feel that the price we pay for her small favours of going out with David 2-3 times a week is too big, so we decided to give up asking her. Yesterday she tried to mitigate on behalf of her monster of a husband and I told her to give it up, because she does not really know Bogdan and if he gets really angry, her prick of a husband may be sorry one day. OK, maybe it was a stupid thing to say, but I was very angry and I just wanted her to leave. I was angry because her stupid fuck of a husband cancelled his contract with the cable company and he gave us a shitty receiver with which we can't record anything anymore - I was so pissed yesterday that this asshole found again a way of bullying us... Her answer surprised me: "Oh, I know the other side of Bogdan as well, once I had forgotten my keys and rang your doorbell, then he came out and opened the door and he looked at me with such a look as if he wanted to kill me" ... My comment: "Did this accidentally happen during David's nap?". Of course it had happened during David's nap, we are both like lions when someone disturbs David's nap... She went on telling me that she had felt very offended and she had even cried because of this incident! Incredible!! This woman has been living with the devil every day for 45 years but cries because of a look that an angry father gives her when she wakes his child... I told her that I find it really despicable of her to hold a grudge for something like this and to remind me of it under these circumstances and also that we think it may be best to never look back once we move out of here, to cut all contact with her as well.

We felt we had no choice with Mutti this time, even though it is so sad and hopeless and it breaks my heart to think of David growing up with no grandparents at all... it hurts so much... almost as much as it hurts this little girl that she never had and never will have loving parents...

We decided that we will start looking for a babysitter for David who should come to us and spend 1-2 hours a week playing with him in his room, so that Bogdan and I can have a little time for ourselves. Except David's sleep hours on the weekend (that we mostly use to eat and relax for an hour - always on standby because David sometimes wakes up and cries after 30'), Bogdan and I do not have one single minute just for ourselves. It has come so far that, for instance, watching "Desperate housewives" together (while Mutti was taking David for a walk in his stroller) has become quality time in our relationship. How pathetic is this?

* * * * *

Today I snapped. Mutti came this morning and I told her about our decision not to use her "favours" anymore because of the high price that we have to pay for them. She left, offended again. Bogdan was not home. I started cooking. I had the onions already sizzling in the pot and the meat ready and I still had to cut the potatoes, the carrots and the peppers, David started crying. He was like glue to my legs, I explained him that mommy was busy cooking, but he started crying louder and more insistent. Louder and louder... Bloody vicious circle... I turned on the radio and he got even louder. I was on the verge of losing my temper, so I didn't want to lose control and I took David out of the kitchen and closed the glass door, while explaining that mommy needs some more minutes to finish cooking. Inside I was boiling, I felt again caught in a trap with no way out. Of course David cried even louder, but at least I was alone in the kitchen and could hurry up with the fucking vegetables... I started singing very loud myself... Then I couldn't take it anymore, I couldn't stand David's cries anymore so I took him to the bedroom, told him to play (yes, it is like this when you feel you are losing your mind!), turned the radio even louder and returned to the kitchen, where I released 4 or 5 primal screams of 10 seconds or longer, until I felt that my voice was gone. 5 minutes of agony later I took David out, he was crying inconsolably and held on to me as if his life depended on it. There is no way I could have felt guiltier. And I'm wondering: if I can feel so much guilt for an incident like this, how am I supposed not to go crazy with all that is still to come?

Today I hit rock bottom.

Cleaning out the (psychological) closet

I don't know about you, but I have some appetite for English again.

Do you know what adult children are? Well, I think you should know, because this concept applies to most of us. Yes, even to those who deny it vehemently (oh, especially to those!): as children of narcissistic, emotionally unavailable parents, we grow up without love, we deny and repress the truth, we learn to adjust and finally become biologically mature but remain emotionally caught in a state of consciousness which is typical for children. Oh, and did I mention that we don't realize it most of the time??

We go through life in our adult bodies, we are doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, journalists or architects etc., we go to work, interact with other people, we think our behaviour is that of an adult person, while, in reality - as soon as the right trigger is activated - we are often acting out of the perspective of the wounded and unloved child that we once were (especially when we are having arguments or feel disappointed and hurt). This will always happen until we start realizing and changing what is really going on within ourselves - and most people are only able to do this after years of therapy, while the vast majority just keep living like zombies whose lives lack all emotional components leading to a possible authentic happiness; we all are adult children.

Yes, lots of these adult children can actually manage their lives "successfully" without anyone ever suspecting anything, simply because most of us are functioning the same way.

Women fit the usual cliché, they have learned a long time ago to bury their negative emotions, to put their own needs behind and always sacrifice themselves for others, they are obsessed with avoiding conflicts and keeping an illusionary harmony and they even manage to believe they are happy, when they do not think too often about it; they forgive for instance their husband's cheating or even the occasional slap in the face, because they desperately want to believe that everything will turn out right, just like they believed that their parents will one day love them and accept them for who they are; in fact, what keeps them going is that deep yearning for the smallest sign of affection, the eternal hope which prevents them from realizing that they have sold their souls for a huge lie and that they are still deprived of love just like they were as children; mostly, however, they act like the little girls who have never been loved and who have learned (or have been taught!) early on to unconsciously beg for a love they will never get, that is why they are easily controlled, manipulated and abused, sometimes without even knowing it, until it is too late. Unfortunately, the ones who suffer most are these women's children.

Men are allowed (sometimes even encouraged) by society to be angry and thus they can easily find scapegoats for their repressed emotions, especially when they talk about money issues, unemployment, foreigners, gypsies, politics, sports... when they are given a possibility to unload the negative energy building up inside them, while still ignoring the true reasons of their anger; men who are blind to the feelings of others; men who see no harm in the genital abuse of retracting the prepuce of little boys or in the genital mutilation called circumcision, because they desperately want to believe that what has once been done to them did no harm, since they have repressed any pain they had felt back then, so that now the abuse manifests itself through other channels such as partial impotency, need for stronger sensations to get aroused or to finish intercourse, emotional absence during intercourse, insensitivity for the woman they have intercourse with etc.; men who are emotional invalids with very limited empathy since they obstinately refuse to remember their own helplessness and dependence as little babies, they like to believe that they have always been in control of their lives and so they assume that all children should do the same and stop "being such babies"... all this while their wives do not dare to confront them about it (then the wives become passive abusers). Unfortunately, the ones who suffer most are these men's children.

When we become parents, all this denial and inner unbalance poses a huge problem, since babies and children have the stunning capacity of continuously triggering parents' repressed emotions and painful memories back to surface.

Babies are strong triggers, for example, for mothers who permanently and inexplicably (!) have the urge to cry after giving birth and are unable to understand that this is because they are re-living THEIR OWN feelings of helplessness, loneliness and THEIR OWN desperation as the unloved and abandoned babies that they once were. Surely it is easier to deny that all this is coming from the inside, it is much more comfortable to blame it on the postnatal depression (a usual "syndrome" for most fresh mothers - but not for all of them!!), it saves them from taking responsibility for their own feelings and especially from further digging into their subconscious in order to discover the real cause of those repressed emotions. There is no such thing as postnatal depression brought on by the newborn, the baby is only the trigger and every postnatal depression is caused exclusively by the repressed childhood emotions of the mother... As soon as women start accepting this fact, they will feel better and they will also (I hope, for their own sake) start wanting to understand the meaning of their depression.

Babies are strong triggers. Example: parents who develop a profound aversion to their baby's crying or their baby's being a "spoiled brat", parents who love their child only when he is compliant and "sweet" at the cost of neglecting his true feelings. [By the way, for the record, a child who resolutely expresses his feelings when he is unhappy or discontent or simply agitated is NOT a spoiled child, even if this annoys his parents who probably want him smiling all the time; a spoiled child is a child whose parents compensate the lack of love with objects, giving him the wrong or not enough emotional food. As Jesper Juul put it: "Spoiled children get too much of what they like and too litle of what they need".] These parents who cannot tolerate it when their child displays strong negative emotions are just being reminded of their own suffering as children, when they were forbidden to feel and show their pain and were expected to grow up faster, speak faster, become more independent faster... practically they were forced to stop being a child... these parents now unconsciously apply the same heartless treatment to their own child, without realizing that they are reinforcing a toxic pattern that had been so "effective" in their own childhood, they are re-inflicting their personal drama upon their child. Repeating the abuse is the inescapable destiny for all those who live in denial and refuse to believe what was done to them.

Even those who live consciously have to carry out a constant fight against old impulses, against inherited reflexes, against the internalised voices of their parents... Even when you become aware of what is going on inside you, when you allow your rage and your repressed feelings to resurface, even when you honour your past experiences and you relive the early pain, even when you remember not only intellectually what has been done to you, when you have identified the agony of the unloved inner child, when you recognised your parents' cruelty under the mask of "love" that they sold you, even when you start fighting against the self-hate, when you realise your own mistakes, even then it is so incredibly hard to silence the inner tyrant that keeps echoing mechanically your parents' unloving words, it is so tremendously hard to act like an adult all the time, to control your inner child, to be empathic and loving with yourself and with the ones you love...

Yes, it is hard work to be an adult and an even harder work to be a good parent.

Babies are strong triggers. Parents who give up their small babies to the care of others do so because they are overburdened and will not admit it: financial reasons are just an excuse, since everybody knows that children need the presence of their mother and not money for expensive toys; career-related reasons show exactly the missing emotional connection to the baby that I was speaking of. These parents have long ago repressed their own feelings of loneliness and abandonment in early childhood and are thus unable to feel, truly FEEL how this harms their babies... There is also the possibility that unconsciously they may even want to let their children feel exactly the same way they did, a sort of perverted misdirected revenge and punishment: their unconscious wrath is aimed at the baby, who is weak and helpless and demanding, while they continue to unconsciously protect the truly guilty ones, their own parents... Oh yes, the human mind does work like that: for instance, mothers who have never been happy often try to sabotage their daughters' relationships because in their minds there should be impossible for their daughters to be happy or loved when the mothers had not been happy or loved themselves.

Parents who expect of their 2 years old babies to be nothing less than geniuses have forgotten how they were drilled themselves (like little monkeys) to perform in order to make their parents proud in front of other adults... oh, and what a little brilliant poems reciting 2 years old monkey I have been, I should know it ;-( These children will grow up with little self-esteem, which will always be connected to things that they DO, never to what they really ARE. These parents are the same unloved children who took refuge in grandiosity and intellectualisation in order to stay in denial, while the energy that they put into this raised an even bigger emotional barrier within themselves and fueled even more intellectualization, leading to a vicious circle of alienation from one's true self. They cannot feel their baby because they have no connection to their own feelings, they are not present in their body, they function only with their brains and thus live like robots. I know it, I've been there and I know that the road back is very long and exhausting and it may even take a whole life to learn how to follow the right path.

The most frequent tragedy that I've seen is that of the mother whose desperate wish for a baby is not the desire to give but to receive love: she transfers her desperate hopes upon her baby, expecting him to repay her for the love she never received from her own parents, for the love that she probably does not receive from her husband either, since she has chosen him according to unconscious criteria in order to re-enact her early fight to deserve the love of her parents (a fight that she never won!). However, when the baby does not fulfil the expectations (and he never does, for it is never meant to be that way!!), the mother's inner rage is triggered and she starts - best case scenario! - to emotionally reject the baby (worst case scenario = verbal abuse, emotional and physical cruelty).

Other mothers, who unconsciously search for a symbiotic relationship with their child, are always in the biggest hurry to have the next child and then maybe another and another, hoping unconsciously that the next baby will - finally - give her the love she craves for (a good example: Angelina Jolie). Needless to say, this will never happen either.

When children start triggering unpleasant emotions, with other mothers again the "I am so nice" masks begin to fall. For the outside world, these mothers may continue to be the incarnation of self-sacrifice and generosity because they are still yearning for affection and recognition from other adults (symbols of their parents) and so their conduct in the society is flawless, they always brighten every party and fulfil everybody's wishes as the perfest hostess, they are always full of empathy and sympathy toward other adults, while their child receives ZERO love and affection; as soon as the child does not fit the image of the perfect baby anymore, these mothers crush it with expectations and give nothing in return except violence or at best indifference.

They say small children do not remember early traumas. My mother did not believe me when I told her that I don't have ONE beautiful memory of her from my early childhood. I do not even remember her face, she was just like a robot working around the house, cooking, cleaning the whole time (her house was her castle, of course). If this is normal, how come I remember the mother of a friend in my 1st grade who took us to see the Nutcracker ballet? How come I perfectly remember my dearest teacher in the 3rd and 4th grade, Doina Popescu? Her lovely and warm green eyes, her long dark hair, her soft voice, her beautiful hands with the red-painted fingernails, her friendly and encouraging smile, I remember her as if she was standing in front of me. I have, however, no such memory of my mother. Now I know why. Because my teacher was the one who really SAW ME, really LOOKED at ME! My mother was a biological mother, she was functioning like a mother to the outside world, but she never did anything to make me happy, she never tried to access MY world and fulfil MY needs. Her frantic attempts to escape the truth (her inner truth) destroyed her life and mine.

The greatest tragedy with all these parents who have never been loved and thus never learned to love themselves, who think this is the normal way of life, is that they will thoughtlessly pass this on to their children, teaching them indirectly to be the same, to adapt, to adjust, to learn to live without their emotional needs being met and to ignore their true feelings, they will destroy their children's souls just like theirs were destroyed. My mother was much too preoccupied to keep up the appearances and maintain her illusionary world and I always obliged her, I was a very bright and chatty and cheerful little girl, because I felt that she only wanted me that way; my sadness and loneliness had no right to be expressed in front of her. That is why I know that words like "oh, but my child is happy, smiling and laughing all the time" are not worth a tinker's dam, they are only what the parents want to believe in their attempt to fool themselves and everybody else, it is yet another proof that they do not really SEE their child, they only see what they want to see.

So, dear parents: let's take care of our inner children and start cleaning out our psychological closets if we want to be able to raise happy children! Confront and get rid of the ghosts of your past, do not ignore them, do not deny them, do not lie to yourselves that what you don't want to see does not exist, take time to explore your unconscious and honour your repressed feelings and experiences, then try to live and behave like adults and not like children, try to set an example for your children of what a balanced inner life should be!

This is the only way of avoiding the mistakes our parents made and of not perpetuating the abuse, the only chance we have of being the parents we never had but always wished for.

More thoughts on Childhood

Yes, this article is inspired by real events and persons. And I don't know why, but today I feel more comfortable writing about childhood in English. Maybe it will help bridle my own hurt feelings.

How does childhood look through the eyes of an infant? All parents want to act "in the best interests" of the child, but do they really succeed? Or is it sometimes just a lie they (try to) live with in order not to feel guilty?

Our core relationship with ourselves is, as we all (should) know, formed in the earliest childhood. During this period of time, we desperately need affectionate, caring parents to love us, to honour our very existence and nurture our soul. We need the constant presence of someone who makes us feel safe, secure, loved and cherished. Anything less is beyond the pale.

Babies have neither the discernment nor the perspective to recognize when their family is dysfunctional, so when their needs are not met, they will simply conclude that there is something terribly wrong with themselves. When parents only do what is best or suitable for themselves and then argue that this is for the child's best, an even deeper wound appears, since no infant has the possibility to defend himself consciously against such a manipulative lie, but he can always feel that it is a lie.

Basically, what I am saying is: if someone loves us, then it should FEEL like they love us. However, most parents have not experienced love themselves, so they grew up with a sense of inadequacy that they always tried to repress (in order to continue to love and honour their toxic parents), so they don't know how to love themselves and are thus unable to love their children the way these children need love. These parents mistake social success and recognition for love, they mistake professional careers and a good standard of life for love, they mistake fulfilling the biological needs of a child for love. Unfortunately, all this is not only insufficient, but it has simply nothing to do with love.

A child needs his parents to spend time with him, to keep him close to them, to validate his very presence in their lives by showing their happiness simply because he is around, an infant needs his parents' permanent presence not only because he needs affection, warmth, body contact, but also because he has no sense of time and the feeling of abandonment arising in the parents' absence is simply devastating. Speaking of the feeling of abandonment, just try to forget for a few minutes the adult perspective. We have long forgotten (repressed!) our own feelings of abandonment in our early childhood, that is why parents unaware of their own past tend to reiterate it with their children without any sense of guilt. Parents who deny that they too have once felt abandoned by their own parents end up by sending their 4-5 months old babies to day care with the conviction that this cannot possibly harm them. But it does harm them, this is for certain.

Still don't get it? Then imagine yourself as a ... let's say ... 6 years old, being invited by someone to their house with the promise that they will take good care of you for the rest of your life. Then imagine, after a few months you are being sent away for most part of the day, to spend this whole time with complete strangers as a surrogate for your family. What you would you think? Honestly! I say you would think that you are simply unwanted. What would you feel? You would feel abandoned. There is nothing in between. Also, the feeling of abandonment comes with a feeling of fear, the fear of being unworthy of love, because children have the magical thinking which puts them in the centre of the universe and they interpret each of the adults' actions as being related to them directly.

It is well known that infants do not begin to understand that their mother is "just in the next room" until they are about one year old. How could they understand the reasons for which they are being left half a day with complete strangers? Please, get it once and for all, children do not understand social or financial criteria, children have feelings. When they spend more time with strangers than in their own home, they inevitably feel abandoned and alone. Besides, children do not understand adult reasoning and, when feeling abandoned, they cannot blame it on their parents because they need the illusion of their parents' love to survive. This is why the child always blames it on himself. No matter what goes wrong, the child thinks and feels it is his fault. And here the future catastrophe takes shape. There is no empathic way of putting this in order to spare the adults' ego. This is the truth.

Personally, I think there is always a way to avoid this. Even my parents, whom I blame for many bad things they did to me, took care to work in different shifts so that one of them could always be with me when I was a little baby. And they were very poor! Wait, can this be part of the answer? That some parents delude themselves into thinking a child needs a good standard of life in order to thrive and that he may be willing to trade his mother's presence for any material junk that the good standard of life would provide? No, it is just another lie designed to cover the real reason: the inability of most parents to register the emotional needs of their children, because they are trapped in their emotional blindness covering the pain of the neglected child that they once were. Still worse than giving your infant away to strangers for most of the day is the self-righteousness of saying that this cannot possibly harm the child. This is another consequence of one's own suppressed and denied feelings of abandonment. My advice: when you are really, really forced to do something that you know is not good for your child's wellbeing and happiness, please do not insist that it is ok and that the child will not suffer! You have the right to feel guilty about it and try to change things, but if you are not willing to do that, at least have the inner strength to acknowledge that you are not doing the child any favour.

The true nature of parent's love resides in its total selflessness, in its desire to really understand the child and to do their very best for the child to FEEL happy, in the child's reality. There is a huge difference between the adult concept of how a child should be happy and the child's own sense of happiness. Parents who are not aware of their own childhood traumas will always intellectualize, analyse, rationalize everything (a defense mechanism) but hardly allow themselves to be confronted with their child's pain, because they are avoiding their own repressed suffering. In time, the child also learns to suppress his own pain and anguish because he sees that they are unbearable for his parents ... and so the vicious circle goes on.

The tragedy of all this is aggravated by the fact that, at the bottom of their heart, all these parents know they are not acting in the best interest of the child. Oh yes, they know it! The better they know it and the more they deny it, the more aggressive is their reaction when confronted. In the past, I have always heard things like "What do you know, you are not a mother yourself!" or "Wait until you have your own child" (why should it matter that I was an unloved child myself so I should know!!), now there is "You don't know shit about my child, mind your own business!". Well, sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. And what most people oversee when atacking me is that I am a good example of what amount of suffering is unleashed in an adult's life once the childhood wounds start showing, I am a good example of how unhappy their own child could become in time if they do not become aware, in order to correct their actions and especially their mentality.

Alice Miller wrote many times about the traumas of childhood and how they are being denied by most of the adults: it's either "I had a happy childhood" or "Oh, I am over it, one shouldn't dwell on the past anymore". She also added that the "enlightened witnesses", those adults who recovered (or are in the process of recovering) from their own traumata and name the abuse for what it is, are always prone to be attacked by other adults who are trying desperately to maintain the veil of denial over their own past and unresolved pain. I know that and I am willing to bear the consequences for my speaking out loud. The adults are pretty able to defend themselves, to run and hide in their castle of empty words with which they try to justify their actions, they can make all kinds of excuses, it is only the little children who have no voice and no power to show their parents that they are wrong. The fact that the traumata are not immediately visible makes it even harder for parents to estimate the profoundness of the emotional wounds they are inflicting upon their children, simultaneously making it easier to deny everything. However, the traumata are real and they will increase in time if parents do not become conscious of the destructive mechanisms they are operating in their families. Becoming aware includes first of all coming out of the denial of their OWN blind spots and ego-driven mistakes. Only thereafter they will be able to see their children as individual and separate human beings who deserve to get the best of their parents in an honest and genuine loving interaction.

Another thought, just as I am about to finish this article: what a shame that all these arguments must be produced in the first place... when in an ideal world natural parenting should be undisputably the only good choice.

OK, looks like sometimes I still get trapped in some stage of rage. It is a newer rage (I am done with a lot of older ones), but it is still a rage triggered by parents who remind me of mine and by the suffering of children with whom I identify myself. Yeah, what else would make me react emotionally like a 5-year old? Plus, I forget that someone who tries to give answers to people who have not yet asked the question will inevitably be looked upon as a disguised aggressor and attacked accordingly. Even if I say the truth, reacting out of the old tape of my childhood wounds is never going to contribute to a healthy communication. I know that. Whenever in rage, my emotional truth takes the lead and I tend to exaggerate and paint an entirely black picture of that person. My rage and the critical parental voice that I internalized long ago are an explosive combination, I have already experienced that many times.

Based on the above-mentioned real events and relating to real persons, I am hereby honestly and humbly apologizing to Simonix for having attacked her on the (indeed very delicate) breastfeeding issue. I remember how I empathised with her at that time, but at the time I wrote my indictment on the AP forum my whole empathy went to her son. I am sure I wanted to hurt her badly, to make her feel at least part of the pain that she inflicted on him when taking him to the doctor to have his foreskin forcibly pushed back. I wanted her to feel a little bit of his suffering because she kept trivialising the fact that her son cried in pain for days when peeing or refused to sit down because he was hurting so badly. It made me so angry and so sad. Dear mothers and fathers, if you may happen to read here, interfering with a child's genitals is always an ABUSE (please take time to read the link carefully! It is in Romanian). Not to see this and to go on saying that it was the right thing to do is persisting in the abusive mentality. Another trauma which will show much later in life, without the child's possibility to make the connection to what happened to him now. This typical adult (male) excuse "It's been done to me and I am ok" is a huge proof of the denial taking place. No, you are not ok if you had to go through genital mutilation, this is definitely so not ok! But if you feel the need to go on idealising your own parents who did this to you, the only logical consequence is that you will not hesitate to make your son suffer the exact way you suffered and deny him the reality of his pain.

After a few sleepless nights, I now know that it is not only the inner child's rage that makes me react so extremely whenever I see parents belittling their children's pain or feelings generally. It is also my greatest present fear that I may fail as a mother BECAUSE of what my mother did to me, that I may be unable to give my son the love that he needs (which is far more important than the love that I feel for him), that it may take forever until I manage to get rid of all the toxic residues that still influence my thinking and my actions. Everytime I identify myself with a child's pain and see his parents act the innocent, this panic grows in me and makes me even angrier. I have been taught by my parents to judge and sometimes I give in and I pass the angry judgment on to someone else. I know I have to stop reacting this way, I know it, damn it, but the hurt is so overwhelming that I can't control myself all the time.

Why I panic? For instance now, ever since my father's visit managed to destroy a little bit more of my inner balance, I have felt the need to seek refuge from my hurt feelings, to run away for a while into a more beautiful world. So I started making scraps and wordarts etc. and stay up until after midnight sometimes (oh, the luxury of a child that sleeps through the night!). Of course I am delighted with the results, of course it is very rewarding to create something beautiful, but nevertheless I know that I am being mostly absent when I do my scraps while David is awake. I know that this is a mistake and I am working on it to correct it, but the remorse is killing me! And still, for the time being I am caught in this hiding place as if my life depended on it. Maybe it does.

So trust me, I am not the perfect mother (ok, who is? but you know what I mean), I am not beyond any blame, not at all, the ones who think I want to leave this impression have been unable to see beyond the mask. I feel mostly helpless and overburdened as a mother, I have the impression that I make mistakes all the time, that I am never doing good enough no matter how hard I try (does that sound familiar, mother?). I am my harshest and most embittered critic, have always been, also a consequence of my parents' abuse. Whatever anybody says about me, with no matter how much hate (yes, holding the mirror to people's faces brings mostly reactions of hate), nothing can ever be worse than the accusations and criticism that I live with inside myself all the time. If it can bring any satisfaction to anyone, here it is, I hope you feel better!
